22 February 2010, Utica R2G core committee established in a meeting held at the Hage Building. The Rust to Green Project partners Cornell University with the cities of Utica and Binghamton to create a viable model for promoting sustainable growth initiatives. The R2G project extends from the needs and potentials identified by the Brookings Institution report Restoring Prosperity: The State Role in Restoring America’s Older Industrial Cities (2007). The report indicates that Utica, Binghamton and five other former industrial cities in New York are poised to overcome challenges to recover and rebuild within the coming decades due to their extant assets, including building stock, civic and neighborhood institutions, universities and transportation. Hage & Hage is happy to serve on this core committee which will advance the objectives of the R2G Initiative and the sustainable growth of Utica, NY.

14 January 2010, Mohawk Valley Chamber of Commerce Small Business, Hage & Hage LLC and Eastern Energy Solutions sponsored a seminar ‘Energy Efficiency Opportunities for Small Business Owners;’ presenters included Hage & Hage LLC, Eastern Energy Solutions, NYSERDA and National Grid; the seminar focused on the energy needs and issues affecting businesses within the Utica-Rome & Mohawk Valley Region. The seminar was given at the Hage Building and attendees were provided the opportunity to tour the region’s first LEED® certified office building.

15 October 2009, the Downtown Utica Arts District Sculpture Initiative was kicked off by the dedication of its first sculpture, a 9-foot tall, 5-foot wide iron tree that features individual branches and realistic bark. The tree was created by students in the Welders Among Community program at Mohawk Valley Community College. This piece of art is made from scrap iron that had accumulated in the welding shop during student training sessions. It was commissioned by J.K. Hage III, a local business man & attorney who is a strong advocate for sustainability. Hage’s building recently received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. It is the first privately-owned commercial office building between Albany and Syracuse to achieve this status.

28 September 2009, The office of Hage & Hage achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for New Construction (LEED® NC) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Green Building Certification Institute. The USGBC’s LEED® system provides third-party verification that a building was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts. The Hage Building is the first and only office building in the region to achieve LEED® NC certification and one of only a few in New York State to achieve Gold. (full article)
